With Cycle for Life Kenya, Kim and Darryl"s CD and DVD, "Take Your Place", numerous concerts, opportunities for story telling, some other events, a lot of phoning and now, Cycle for Life Alberta .... helping enormously to raise the profile of AIDS and of MCC Partners' work, 208,000 dollars has been pledged or donated to MCC's work with AIDS, the Generations Program. The Good Friday Service in Calgary, a month ago, additionally raised 41,000 to support Sakria, MCC's biggest AIDs partner, in Nepal. MCC's AIDS Program works with 70 partners in 27 countries. I read last week in the Calgary Herald, that there are 7,700 new infections a day, world wide, and that 5,500 people die or AIDS related illness, every day.
This morning, a group of us from MCCA had a chance to talk with about 40 students at Menno Simons Christian School, about AIDs. We showed them also a 12-min video about the work of one MCC partner, Prebysterian Outreach Mission, in Najile, Kenya. We then took off, all 40 plus some MCC staff, and road about 35 km on Calgary's bike paths, to raise awareness about AIDS, even amongst ourselves, and, as with Cycle for Life in Kenya, to raise the profile of both the need and the response/programs. One 14-year old girl, Kennedy Krahn, has raised, "just by doing it", well over 700 dollars herself. Kennedy has been doing this now, with amazing success, for several years.
